I was diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer in 2019. I was 37 and there was very little cancer in my family.
I delayed my chemo treatment by 2 weeks, as I intended to freeze my eggs. I started 4 months of chemo, had a lumpetomy surgery, followed by weeks of radiation treatment.
After undergoing my treatments and being cancer free, I was diagnosed with the BCRA1 gene alteration. This means I am higher risk of certain cancers than someone without the alteration.
I decided straight away to have a preventive double mastectomy/reconstruction. I am awaiting to have an oophorectomy (removal of ovaries).
I have been extremely lucky in my journey. There are many people who have not been as fortunate as me.
I am extremely grateful to the Marie Keating Foundation in particular for all they do in regards to awareness and support for those affected with BRCA gene alterations. I found their yearly BRCA Conference and support group to be a huge help to me.
